Step-by-step guide
Recover a Google Workspace work or school account
Short answer
A managed account can follow an organization's rules. Your administrator may control password resets and recovery choices, so consumer-account instructions may not apply.
Open the route mapWe never ask for your account address, password or verification code. AccountsAid cannot recover an account for you.
Who controls the next step?
| Criterion | Personal Google Account | Work or school account |
|---|---|---|
| Use Google's consumer account recovery flow. | Contact your organization administrator or its help desk when self-service recovery is unavailable. |
Information to give your administrator
Describe the problem without sharing secrets.
-
Your account address
Identify the managed account and organization.
-
Exact sign-in message
Say whether it is a password, second-factor or suspension issue.
-
Available factors
Tell them which trusted devices or methods you still control; never send codes or passwords.
User lockout and administrator lockout differ
Note: If you are an ordinary organization user, contact the help desk through a trusted channel. If you are the administrator and no other administrator can help, use the specific administrator-recovery guidance; do not assume the user password-reset instructions establish that process.
Can a Workspace user reset the password themselves?
| Criterion | Self-service enabled | SSO or Password Sync |
|---|---|---|
| Google says the administrator can enable password recovery for eligible users. Whether you see that route depends on the organization’s configuration. | The ordinary self-service setting does not apply to organizations using third-party SSO or Password Sync. Use the organization’s trusted help channel instead of repeating a consumer reset. |
If you are the administrator
Note: Another super administrator may be able to reset your password. Otherwise Google documents automated and, when offered, support-assisted administrator recovery. Domain ownership evidence can be part of that process; it is not a method for entering an unrelated organization’s account.
