Google Account recovery methods explained

Short answer

A recovery phone, separate email, trusted device, backup code and passkey do different jobs. None is a universal override for Google's ownership checks.

We never ask for your account address, password or verification code. AccountsAid cannot recover an account for you.

Methods and their limits

These are common methods, not an exhaustive list. Google may offer additional recovery options according to the account, region and current setup.

  • Recovery contact

Receives checks or alerts when Google offers that route.

  • Trusted device

Provides familiar sign-in context or an existing session.

  • Backup code

    A pre-generated second-step code; it is not a password.

  • Passkey or security key

A registered possession factor that must remain under your control.

Availability varies

Note: Google says not every recovery option is available for every region, account or device. Work and school accounts may use administrator-managed routes.

Inspect current options rather than treating this list as exhaustive

Note: Google’s recovery-options help now also describes recovery contacts and selfie-video setup for eligible accounts. Read the restrictions and any sharing implications inside Google before adding a method; availability is not universal.

Newer methods are optional and need preparation

Google’s current recovery-options help describes recovery contacts and selfie video, but neither should be treated as a universal way into a locked account.

  • Recovery contact

You must invite a trusted person and they must accept. Google says the request lasts 7 days, then an accepted contact has another 7-day wait before it can be used for recovery.

  • Recovery selfie video

This works only if you added a selfie video beforehand and Google offers the prompt during recovery. Google says it is currently unavailable for Workspace accounts, child accounts and Advanced Protection accounts.

  • Recent security changes

Google may still offer codes to previous recovery information for 7 days after changing recovery information or other authentication factors. A recovery phone change may separately take up to 7 days to take effect.

A method has a role, not a universal rank

Methods solve different parts of sign-in. Google may offer options that vary by account and current setup, so use this comparison to read the prompt you actually receive.

  • Password — something you know

A forgotten password can be reset only after Google accepts the recovery checks.

  • Backup code or key — a prepared factor

Useful when offered, but cannot be created for a locked account from this guide.

  • Recovery contact — an address or number you control

May receive prompts or notices; a new contact is not automatic ownership proof.

  • Familiar device — context or an existing session

Can improve the relevance of an attempt; it does not guarantee approval.
