Scam breakdown

Your Google passkey was on a lost device: what now?

Short answer

A passkey is tied to a device or credential manager. Try another sign-in method first, then remove the lost device's passkey from your account after access returns.

We never ask for your account address, password or verification code. AccountsAid cannot recover an account for you.

Where another passkey may live

Do not assume every device has the same credentials.

  • Another personal device

A passkey may be available on a different phone or computer.

  • Credential manager

A synced passkey may be shown by the manager you use.

  • Other sign-in method

Google's 'Try another way' returns to available alternatives.

After you can sign in

Secure the account as well as the physical device.

  1. Open passkeys and security keys

Inspect the factors associated with your Google Account.

  2. Remove the lost passkey

Remove the entry for a device you no longer control.

  3. Review active sessions

Sign out lost-device sessions and check for unfamiliar access.

A missing device does not describe every passkey

First determine whether another sign-in method or an existing session is available. A passkey may be on a device or in a credential manager; losing one device does not prove every method is gone.

  1. Before access — try another offered method

On Google's sign-in screen, use “Try another way” if the missing passkey is the selected option. Follow only methods shown for your account.

  2. After access — remove the lost passkey

Once signed in from a device you control, review passkeys and security keys. Google distinguishes a passkey you created from one automatically registered on an Android device. Lost access to Google 2-Step Verification?

  3. If no method works — use owner recovery

A new key cannot retroactively prove ownership of a locked account. Use the available recovery route and keep a familiar device nearby. Recover a Google Account you own
