Lost your Google backup codes?
Short answer
Backup codes only help if you saved them before lockout. If the codes are gone, look for another configured second step or use account recovery.
Open the route mapWe never ask for your account address, password or verification code. AccountsAid cannot recover an account for you.
Two different situations
| Criterion | Still signed in | Locked out |
|---|---|---|
| Review your 2-Step Verification settings and replace or regenerate backup options within Google, if offered. | Try another registered factor or Google's recovery flow. A guide cannot generate codes for you. |
Useful alternatives
The exact choices depend on what you set up in advance.
-
Another phone
A signed-in device may receive a Google prompt.
-
Security key or passkey
A registered factor may appear under 'Try another way'.
-
Trusted browser
A previously trusted session may still be available.
Replacing a set is different from retrieving the old one
| Criterion | Still have safe account access | No safe account access |
|---|---|---|
| Google’s current 2-Step Verification help describes getting a new set of backup codes. Treat this as replacement of your account’s backup option, not retrieval from an independent guide. | Generating a replacement set requires account access. Use another previously configured factor or official recovery first; a file-search service cannot issue valid codes. |
What changes when you are signed in?
A backup code is useful only if it was created and saved before the lockout. The next action depends on whether you can still enter the account by another method.
-
Access remains — replace the missing set
Inside Google's 2-Step Verification settings, revoke lost backup codes and generate a new set if the option is offered. Store the new codes privately. Update your Google recovery email and phone
-
Locked out — use a different existing factor
Check a registered device, key or other method offered at sign-in. Codes that were never saved cannot be retrieved from this guide. Lost access to Google 2-Step Verification?
